In today's society, LED lights are favored by more and more businesses. Many industries have applied LED lights, which can be seen everywhere. What is the principle of LED lights?

Light Emitting Diode(LED light),Also known as the light emitting diode.It is a kind of solid state semiconductor device that can convert electric energy into visible light directly.：The heart of the LED is a semiconductor chip with one end attached to a scaffold, one end attached to a negative pole, and the other connected to the positive pole of the power supply, so that the whole chip is encapsulated in epoxy resin.

A semiconductor chip consists of two parts: a P-type semiconductor, in which holes dominate, and an N-type semiconductor, in which electrons dominate.But when the two semiconductors are joined, a P-N junction forms between them. When an electric current is applied to the chip through the wire, the electrons are pushed into the P-zone, where they combine with the hole and emit energy as photons, which is how leds light up. And the wavelength of light, the color of light, is determined by the material that forms the P-N junction.

Led can emit red, yellow, blue, green, green, orange, purple and white light directly.

At first, LED was used as an indicator light source for instruments. Later, LED of various light colors was widely used in traffic signal lights and large-area display screens, generating good economic and social benefits.Take the 12-inch red traffic light, for example. In the United States, the long-lived, low-light, 140-watt incandescent lamp was originally used as the light source, producing 2,000 lumens of white light. After going through the red filter, the light loses 90%, leaving only 200 lumens of red light. In the new design, Lumileds USES 18 red LED lights that consume 14 watts of power, including circuit loss, to produce the same effect. Car signal lamp is also an important field of LED light source application.

For general lighting, people need more white light sources. In 1998, the white LED was developed successfully. The LED is made from a GaN chip packaged with yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG). GaN chips emit blue light.The HIGH temperature sintered YAG phosphor containing Ce3+ is excited by this blue light and emits yellow light with a peak value of 550nLED M. The blue LED substrate is installed in a bowl-shaped reflection chamber and covered with a resin thin layer mixed with YAG, approximately 200-500nm. Part of the blue light from the LED substrate is absorbed by the phosphor, and the other part is mixed with the yellow light from the phosphor to produce white light.

For InGaN/YAG white LED, by changing the chemical composition of YAG phosphor and adjusting the thickness of phosphor layer, color temperature of 3500-10000K can be obtained. This method of getting white light from blue leds is widely used because of its simple construction, low cost and high technology maturity.
